Question by ♥Summer♥: How do I write a resume for my first job at Subways?
I really want to get this job at Subways, it’s my first proper job, but I don’t know what to put on my resume!! I’ve never done one before and I have no idea what to do. Ideas on the internet don’t help either because I don’t want a really big professional one, just a simple eye-catching one. I’m 16, please help!!

Think of a resume as an outline of your experiences that make you fit for the job.

DO look at the templates that you find online. There are some very simple ones, and you need to fill a page so that it looks professional.

Your first section is your objective. Here you state in two lines or less what you want to do. Something about gaining experience working for Subway (And do spell it right. Unless you’re thinking of something that’s not the sandwich shop, then it’s Subway and not Subways. Spelling it wrong is instant death. In fact, spelling anything wrong on your resume is instant death. You might get away with one typo. But more than that will doom you.)

Next you’ll probably list your academic experience. List your high school, your GPA, and any school-related things you do like National Honor Society, or something that will look good. Put it in bullet points.

Next is your work experience. If you’re strong in this area, put it before the academic experience. Put anything you’ve got on there, even if it’s just babysitting. List specifics, like dates. And list the specific skills you learned from these jobs. All in bullets. It has to look professional.

Next, activities. If you do anything kind of cool like karate or dance or singing, put it in. You can always talk in the interview about how it’s taught you teamwork or has made you goal-oriented or something.

Finally, skills. Here you list any languages you know and anything on the computer that you know how to do.

And, of course, MAKE IT PROFESSIONAL. Do not do anything silly to make it eye-catching. They do not give a crap if you know how to use Word Art or if you figured out how to print in color. They’ll assume that you’re not serious and can’t present a professional front to customers. They will not forgive you for typing it up in half an hour and making a ton of mistakes. Writing a resume will take longer than you think, so give yourself enough time. Spell everything right. Make everything accurate. Format in a way that is visually appealing. Remember, you have one page to prove that they can put you behind a counter, and you will act so professionally and work so well that they will think it’s worth paying you cold hard cash.
